Interview with Mary Parker and Giveaway

Today I have the great pleasure of having Mary Parker, Author of The Awakening of Leeowyn Blake on my blog for an interview.

First of all I want to thank you for taking time out of your schedule to answer a few questions for me.

1. Can you introduce yourself to my followers and tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m a native Texan but was raised in Tennessee. I’ve been writing pretty much my whole life. I tried college, but after a couple of years and multiple changes in majors, I realized it just wasn’t for me. Kind of like Jane Austen, I decided I wanted to ‘live by my pen.’ Of course that has meant waiting on tables until ‘the pen’ starts actually earning a living. I have a close knit family and love hanging out with my family and friends.

2. How did you come up with the idea for The Awakening of Leeowyn Blake and how long did it take to go from an idea to an actual book?
I had a dream when I was quite young that was the germ of the story. That idea never really left me, but it morphed into a number of different storylines before it finally settled into its current incarnation as The Awakening of Leeowyn Blake. Once I actually had the final storyline in place it took around a year and a half from the time I put the first words on paper until the book was published.

3. Did you get any inspiration from people you know for your book?
I did. Several of the characters, such as Peach and Bethany, are based on close friends and family members. I drew on their mannerisms, speech patterns, and even physical traits to help develop the characters in the book. Of course there are also distinct differences between the characters in my book and the actual people.

4. Leeowyn is an unusual name, how did you come up with it and were there any other names that you had in mind?
Leeowyn was a name I created when I first came up with the story. The name just felt right for the character. I didn’t do any kind of name search to find the name, and there is no hidden meaning behind her name. Once I had her name I never considered giving her any other name.

5. The Awakening of Leeowyn Blake finished but is open for a second book, are there any plans for a second book and if so how is the process going, estimated publication date?
There are definitely plans for series of seven books. The process of the second book has taken a lot longer than I expected, I think because I had been really writing The Awakening of Leeowyn Blake in my head for years. I’m really pleased with the way the first book came out and want to make sure I maintain the integrity of the story. I don’t want to screw it up by trying to force the second book too quickly. So, long story short, I don’t have publication date for the second book that is set in stone yet, but it’s coming and I think it is going to be really good.

6. What has been the best thing you have experienced since your book has been released?
Just the fact that people are actually buying the book. The idea that there are people out there, other than my family and friends, who enjoy what I’ve written is amazing to me. It’s quite a thrill to go to a book signing and have people want me to sign a copy of my book.

7. If you could have a dinner party with anyone you wanted, who would you invite and why?
George R.R. Martin, JRR Tolkein, and Ray Bradbury. They are my favorite authors and I’ve love to just have the opportunity to be in their presence and hear how they approach the craft of storytelling.
